Netherlands vs Ukraine (3-2) Jun 13, 2021 Player Ratings and Stats

Netherlands made it two wins from two on Thursday night with a 2-0 victory over Austria to confirm their spot in the knock-out rounds of Euro 2020.

Frank de Boer’s side were perhaps a little fortunate in their opening game against Ukraine but were certainly good for all three points as they downed a timid and ultimately disappointing Austria side with relative ease.

There’s no doubt that the Netherlands had to be at their very best to beat Austria and to do that they needed the expertise of Memphis Depay up front. Thankfully the future Barcelona player was on form to put his side in front when he stepped up and converted from the penalty spot after just 11 minutes.

Although the forward never doubled his tally on the night, Depay was a constant threat for the Netherlands with runs in behind and cut backs from wide areas. Sure, the forward should have done better when he fired a clear opportunity over the crossbar just before half time but on the whole it was another impressive performance from Depay that makes it eight goals in his last nine games for his country.

While Holland may still be trying to figure out which forward line works best for them, there’s no doubt that their defence is well and truly sorted with the fantastic Matthijs de Ligt at the heart of it all.

In the first half against Austria the Juventus talent completed all 28 of his passes, touched the ball 32 times, made four ball recoveries and completed two tackles. In the second half, as Austria pushed for an equalizer, he was even better.

While there may be some logic to David Alaba playing in central defence for Austria – it’s a position he used to play regularly for Bayern Munich and one that suits him as an experienced member of the squad – it’s undoubtedly a position that limits his influence on the game.

The recent Real Madrid signing is just as comfortable at left back or in central midfield and coil have perhaps provided more creativity for an Austria team that managed just four shots off target and not a single one on target throughout the match.
